Samantha Shires, a middle school teacher, uses the website ChronoZoom to help get her students more interested in history! Chronozoom is an educational tool that is used to help students visually see historical events on a virtual timeline. Students can study the history of the world through this tool, and also add their own stories that they want to be told! Shires feels that using Chronozoom has added life back into history and has got students excited about learning! She uses this tool to make timelines of important events from the Age of Exploration to World War II. Shires also uses this tool to let her students create timelines in the way they see history by putting words and pictures to stories from the past to show what they think is important!
I feel that Shires complies with the National Educational Technology Standard for Teachers, especially the Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments. She incorporates Chronozoom into her classroom in an effective way that not only helps students learn history, but also teaches them to incorporate useful digital tools into their learning! She promotes students creativity by giving them a chance to add their own stories to the timeline. She cares about what her students think is important in history, not merely memorizing historical facts. However, Shries does not comply as well with the standard of Promoting and Modeling Digital Citizenship and Responsibility. She does not state that she has explained the importance of Copyright to her students, or the importance of teaching safe and legal digital use. She did not explain the vitality of students understanding digital ettiquitte and responsible social interactions that come along with the use of digital technology. I think that to confer all of the Technology Standards, Shires should add a lesson around the use of Chronozoom that introduces students to the importance of digital citizenship and responsibility.
Overall, I feel the way Shires uses Chronozoom in her classroom is helpful and effective in her students learning! I would use this digital tool and lessons in my classroom!
